Oh, be on duty at all times, and when you see a child in trouble, immediately run to Okara and radio for help.

Ryder Williams’ courage became an example

According to California State Parks, Nathaniel remained adrift about 15 yards underwater. Williams reached among the strong waves and caught hold of the child and kept trying to keep Okra safe. The situation remained difficult and after some time, Nathaniel’s body became loose. Williams held on to the okra until another lifeguard, Aaron Bohnen, arrived to help.
The video of the rescue quickly went viral on social media. The video clearly shows Nathaniel’s efforts to keep Williams from leaving despite his poor sea condition. After the incident, medical examination of Nathaniel was done and Okra did not suffer serious physical injuries.
Williams would later say in his statement that he was grateful for the opportunity to return Nathaniel safely to his family. He also said that the work of lifeguards is to keep the public safe and other lifeguards also do similar rescues every day.

Deep gratitude to father Sumit Rai

Nathaniel’s father Sumit Rai greatly appreciated Williams’ bravery in saving his son. According to him, Williams risked his safety to reach Nathaniel. This incident was extremely emotional for the family, as Nathaniel’s life was in serious danger.
After the rescue, the Rai family and the Williams family also grew closer. Both families thanked each other and Williams’ family suggested they support the Santa Cruz County Parks Department’s junior guard program instead of accepting individual donations.
