However, the Spanish government currently refuses to declare a national emergency. The Home Ministry said that the situation is certainly serious, but right now this migrant wave is not considered a direct threat to national security. According to the government, different ministries work together on border security, relief arrangements and humanitarian assistance.
Experts believe that there could be several reasons behind this sudden increase in migration. Some reports cast suspicion on human trafficking gangs, while others blame a recent court decision, suggesting that traffickers have become more active after the war. Economic crisis, unemployment, conflict and search for a better life are also considered to be the main reasons for migration.
The Spanish and Moroccan governments continued to negotiate on this situation. Morocco also claims to increase border surveillance to reduce attempts to cross the border illegally. Both the countries should jointly monitor the situation and build fences.
Meanwhile, humanitarian organizations say that providing security, food, treatment and temporary shelter to the people crossing the sea is of utmost importance. Many migrants, after traveling a long distance, reach the barges and are found physically very weak.
