June 21, 2026, Aatmanirbhar Bharat Milestone marked a historic moment for the Indian Navy in Kolkata. Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially inducted three indigenous shipsβINS Dunagiri, INS Sanshodhak, and INS Agrayβinto the Indian Navy. These three ships are seen as symbols of India’s growing maritime strength, defense self-reliance, and modern naval capabilities.
Prime Minister Modi stated Aatmanirbhar Bharat Milestone that maritime power plays a significant role in a nation’s economic growth, national security, and global influence. Through this event, India has sent a clear message that it is rapidly moving towards further strengthening its strategic presence in the Indian Ocean region.
INS Dunagiri is a state-of-the-art stealth frigate. Part of Project 17A, it has been built using advanced technology that makes it difficult for enemy radars to detect. The ship is equipped with advanced weaponry, missile systems, and sensors capable of simultaneously countering threats from the sea, air, and underwater.
The second ship is INS Sanshodhak, a survey vessel. Its primary role involves gathering data on ocean depths, maritime routes, seabed topography, and other critical information. In addition to enhancing the Indian Navy’s maritime surveillance capabilities, the ship will assist in scientific research, disaster management, and safe navigation. For this reason, it is also being referred to as a “floating marine laboratory.”
The third ship is INS Agray, developed as an anti-submarine warfare platform. Its primary objective is to detect and neutralize enemy submarines. Equipped with modern sonar systems, torpedoes, and rocket launchers, this ship further strengthens India’s coastal security.
Most importantly, more than 75 percent indigenous content has been used in the construction of these three ships. More than 200 Indian MSMEs have contributed to their construction. This has not only boosted India’s defense production capacity but also created employment opportunities for thousands of people. It is being hailed as a successful example of the “Atmanirbhar Bharat” (Self-Reliant India) initiative.
In today’s changing global geopolitical landscape, the importance of maritime security is constantly growing. The Indian Ocean is a key route for global trade, and a strong navy in this region serves as a hallmark of a nation’s strategic strength.
