Inequality in Indian Law: Sonam Wangchuk in Jail, Unnao Rape Convict Gets Bail

Inequality in Indian Law exposed as Sonam Wangchuk completes 100 days in jail while Unnao rape convict Kuldeep Sengar gets bail.

Today, the confidence of the general public in the Inequality in Indian law justice system is shaking. On one side is Sonam Wangchuk, a non-violent agitator who has completed 100 days in jail but has not yet been released.

He has not committed any violence, nor anything anti-national, he has just expressed himself in a democratic way. Again, the question arises as to what compels him to be kept in jail for so long.

At the same time, look at the story of Kuldeep Singh Sengar, the convict of the Unnao rape case, one of the most shameful cases in the history of the country. The court sentenced him to life imprisonment, but he was out on bail within a few years.

It is beyond the comprehension of the common man to get legal relief for the perpetrator of a crime that ruined a girl’s entire life.

This difference clearly shows that the Inequality in Indian law is not the same for everyone. The question is not why the law provides for bail, the question is for whom is the law soft and for whom is it strict? Has asking questions of power today, trying to tell the truth, become a bigger crime than a heinous crime like rape?

When peaceful protesters rot in jail and criminals roam freely, the soul of democracy groans. Justice is not just a word in a book, justice means equality, sensitivity and timely decisions. If these three are not done, the law will only become a weapon of the powerful.

The Constitution of this country gives freedom of expression to every citizen. People like Sonam Wangchuk are exercising the same freedom. Then if they are put in jail and the perpetrators escape, what will the younger generation learn?

Today, the justice system needs to reflect. If justice is blind, it should not distinguish between the weak and the strong. Otherwise, the trust of the people will soon be broken.
