Indiana Flooding: Severe Storms Kill 6, Wash Away Roads and Trigger Mass Power Outages

Indiana flooding leaves at least six dead as severe storms bring record rainfall, washed-out roads, dangerous rescues and widespread power outages across the state.

Due to Indiana flooding, there was a huge devastation in the American state of Indiana in recent days. Continuous heavy rains, sudden floods and swollen rivers caused huge damage to roads, houses and infrastructure. According to state emergency officials, at least six people lost their lives due to the bad weather.

Indiana flooding

The flood situation became serious in many areas including the capital of Indiana, Indianapolis. At many places, water was seen flowing rapidly on the roads, while some roads and streets were washed away in the strong current of flood. Due to heavy water, normal traffic was affected and relief and rescue teams also faced a lot of problems.

Gil river overflowing due to heavy rain

There were several rounds of heavy rains in Indiana, which caused huge pressure on rivers, streams and drainage systems. In some areas, more than 11 inches of rain was recorded within two days. After this heavy rain, the water level of White River reached dangerous level.

At some places the water level of the river reached more than 24 feet, surpassing the historical flood record. Water gushed rapidly into the Basal area on the banks of the river; efforts were made to start an operation to evacuate the local people from Jawana to a safe place.

Rescue of hundreds of people

During the most dangerous times of flood, relief teams resort to the use of boats in many areas. Teams of the fire department in Indianapolis rescued about 95 people and 45 pets.

Hundreds of people were also evacuated from their homes in Delaware County. Officials continue to appeal to people not to drive vehicles through flood waters or try to cross on foot.

Even shallow water can be extremely dangerous due to strong currents. The torrent of water flowing from the vehicle could knock a person out of balance in a few seconds.

Electricity system also affected

Due to the severe storm and floods, the electricity system in Indiana was also badly affected. At its peak, more than 300,000 electricity customers were affected. Later, work to restore electricity started in many areas, but thousands of people are still facing electricity problems.

The flood caused damage to roads, bridges, power lines and other essential infrastructure, making relief work difficult. Even after the water recedes, cleaning and repair work in the affected area is expected to take time.

Approval of federal aid

The Indiana administration is asking for federal assistance to help families and communities affected by floods and storms. US President Donald Trump approved the state’s request for federal disaster aid, providing additional resources for Jakkara relief and reconstruction.

Although there is less possibility of rain in some areas, in other areas the officials keep warning to exercise caution due to the rising water level of the river. Even after the water recedes, danger may remain in the low-lying areas along the river banks.

This incident of Indiana flooding shows that continuous heavy rainfall within a few hours could disrupt the life of the entire area. The death of six people, displacement of thousands of people, damage to roads and power systems, and large-scale rescue operations clearly demonstrate the seriousness of this disaster in Indiana.

Now the biggest challenge ahead is the safe return of the affected families to their homes, repair of roads and bridges, restoration of electricity and bringing the flood damaged areas back to normalcy.
