India Blocks Water to Pakistan Chenab Flow Drops, Crisis Deepens

India blocks water to Pakistan, reducing Chenab River flow by 90% after treaty suspension, impacting Punjab farms and triggering global concern.

India Blocks Water to Pakistan – Following the April 22, 2025 Pahalgam terrorist attack, which killed 26 innocent people, the Indian government took a major strategic step. The 1960 Indus Water Treaty, which was the basis for water sharing between India and Pakistan, was suspended by India. Following the decision, India closed the gates of Baglihar and Salal dams in Jammu and Kashmir to control the flow of water. According to official data, the water of the Chenab River decreased by about 90% in Pakistan, directly affecting agriculture in the Punjab region of Pakistan.

The report from the Indian Ministry of Water Resources indicates that the move is legally feasible, as India can fully utilize its water resources after the treaty is suspended. Meanwhile, Pakistan is talking about filing a complaint with the United Nations calling the move β€œwater weaponization”. Experts say that India Blocks Water to Pakistan is not just an emotional response, but a strategic pressure measure, so that Pakistan curbs cross-border terrorism. Satellite data and hydrological studies (as reported by the World Resources Institute and NASA) also confirm that there has been a sudden sharp drop in Chenab river flow, indicating human control rather than natural.

Indian government officials have made it clear that there will be no talks on restoring the Indus Water Treaty unless concrete action is taken against terrorism. Meanwhile, Pakistani agricultural experts are warning that if the situation continues, crop production could fall sharply and the risk of food crisis could increase. With South Asia already struggling with water shortages, the move could pose new challenges to regional stability. International analysts also believe that water is no longer just a natural resource, but is becoming a geopolitical weapon.

It is clear from this whole development that India is now taking a tough stance against terrorism, working on a strategy of pressure at all levels, which will determine the direction of India-Pakistan relations in the coming years.
