India is now becoming increasingly self-sufficient in defense manufacturing. Final assembly of India’s first privately built military transport aircraft, the C-295, was completed ahead of schedule at the Tata Advanced Systems plant in Gujarat. The Indian government is buying 56 C-295 aircraft. The initial 16 of these aircraft are being built by Airbus in Spain, while the remaining 40 will be manufactured at the Tata-Airbus factory in Gujarat. The plant, which will be inaugurated by the Prime Minister in October 2024, is considered a huge step forward for India’s private defense manufacturing sector. According to defense experts, the project will also create thousands of jobs and give India a strong identity in the global defense market.
The C-295 aircraft is a modern twin-turboprop military aircraft. It can simultaneously carry about 71 personnel or up to 10 tons of luggage. The aircraft is considered very useful for the Indian Air Force, especially in high altitude areas like Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh, which have short runways and difficult weather conditions.
According to the Defense Ministry, the aircraft can land easily on short-haul runways. This will greatly facilitate the movement of logistics supplies and personnel to the army.
Experts believe that India could become a major defense manufacturing hub, rather than just an arms buyer. The partnership between Tata and Airbus also enhances Indiaโs technological capabilities.
