CONGRESS SUPPORTER KILLED WEST BENGAL β€” A 43-year-old stock trader Debdeep Chatterjee was beaten to death in Asansol, West Bengal, as the first phase of polling ended. According to reports, he was near his house on the evening of April 26 when an argument started over touching a minor motorbike. Gradually, the argument turned into a violent fight. According to the statement of Debdeep’s wife, he was trying to contact local Congress leader Prasenjit Puitandi by phone, but the attackers continued to punch and kick him until he lost consciousness.

He was later pronounced dead by doctors when he was taken to hospital. CCTV footage of the incident has also surfaced, clearly showing how the mob attacks him. The Congress party has accused the Trinamool Congress (TMC) of β€œpost-poll violence” in the incident, which the TMC denies outright. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also made a statement saying the incident was an attack on democracy and a way to suppress the Opposition.

Police are currently detaining two people for questioning and are continuing to investigate based on family statements and video evidence. Tension is prevailing in the Asansol area and locals are also demanding security. Experts say Bengal has a history of post-election violence, and this incident could be part of that link.

The β€œproof” that has emerged so far in this case is mainly based on CCTV footage, statements from the victim’s family, and initial police investigation reports, proving the gravity of the incident. The TMC, on the other hand, claims it was a normal fight, which is being given a political colour. Now the real truth will be clear only after the police investigation.
